A visitor to Hue once remarked after his vacation here: “A visit to Hue would not be complete without a boat excursion on the gentle Perfume River, or else you cannot feel the romance of Hue”.ThePerfume River (Vietnamese: Sông Hương or Hương Giang) is a river that crosses the capital city of Hue, in the central Vietnamese province of Thua Thien Hue. Perfume or Huong River is around 80 kilometers long, and owes its name to the fact that it flows through many forests of aromatic plants before reaching Hue, bringing with it a pure and fresh aroma.

The river flows through a series of beauty-spots, taking visitors to every corner of the ancient citadel when you travel by boat. Along the river, you can visit Hen & Da Vien Islets, Truong Tien Bridges, come to the Royal Tomb of Minh Mang, Tu Duc, Khai Dinh Emperors, Hon Chen Temple, Thien Mu Pagoda. Upstream, at the Tomb of Thien Tho, you can hear the rustling of the pine tree, which may help you become a… poet!

The Citadel of Hue City

citadel

The Citadel Complex of Hue, served as the headquarter of Nguyen Dynasty from 1805 to 1945, is now one of the important relics of the Hue ancient Capital – the World Cultural Heritage, capturing much of tourists’ attention. The poetic and beautiful Hue of Vietnam was chosen to be the capital of the Southern Kingdom under Nguyen Lords’ Dynasty, and officially became the nation’s capital under Nguyen Dynasty. The complex is located on the North bank of Huong River (Perfume River), inside Hue city. It is a huge complex covering an area of 520ha and comprising three circles of ramparts, Kinh Thanh Hue (Hue Capital Citadel), Hoang Thanh (Royal Citadel) and Tu Cam Thanh (Forbidden Citadel)

Thien Mu Pagoda

thien mu pagoda
Located on the North bank of Perfume river, Thien Mu Pagoda (since 1601) is one of the most famous and beautiful temples in hundred ones in Buddhist City of Hue. Its beautiful and ancient architectural structures of worship attracts a lot of tourists, and local people come to sightseeing and pray. Besides the architectural value, the pagoda is also famous for the event that buddhist monk from this temple, Thich Quang Duc, burn himself to death for anti-government protest in 1963

Hon Chen Temple (Jade Cup Temple)

This underrated temple is one of Hue’s most interesting. Followed by a devoted number of Cham descendents that worship the Goddess Ya NA, this temple houses some unique artefacts and colourful designs. Its location on the Perfume River by Jade Cup mountain make a visit here all the more pleasant.

Look for the small, smiling figurines in the cabinets; their expressions are very different for divinities!

Minh Mang Tomb

minh mang tomb 1

The construction of the tomb of Minh Mang started in 1840 and was completed in 1843. It is located in an enclosed hilly area of 18ha in Cam Khe village, 12 km from the centre of Hue.

Minh Mang tomb is a standard architectural complex consisting of 40 big and small constructions which include palaces, temple, pavilions, etc., designed on symmetric axis along the Dai Hong gate outside to the foot of La Thanh behind the Emperor’s tomb. Visit to Minh Mang tomb, tourists fancy that they are wandering in a world of painting, poetry and philosophy – besides the strictness, majesty and symmetry of the architectural constructions.

The tomb of Minh Mang has an air of magnificence and formality, and its architectural design harmoniously blends with its natural surroundings.
